Master these 7 grammar tips if you want to sound smarter

Master these 7 grammar tips if you want to sound smarterMaster these 7 grammar tips if you want to sound smarterAs the executive editor of Avenue Magazine, a luxury lifestyle publication based in New York City, I see the importance of proper grammar every day. But you dont have to work in publishing to realize the necessity of good writing. Misplaced commas, an incorrect spelling, or a missing hyphen can change the meaning of a sentence.Language rules exist for clarity. A classic example is the sentence Lets eat mom, which reads much differently from Lets eat, mom. In the first, the writer is having her mom for dinner. In the second, she is urging her mom to eat with her.Dont get caught up in an schmelzglas chain of miscommunication. Read on for seven tips on how to improve your English expertise.Read frequentlyWriting well can become second nature to those who also read well. Pay attention to how authors structure their sentences and how they use commas and sentence length to adjust tone and cadence. Reading can help to increase vocabulary. If you dont know where to begin, ask colleagues for reading suggestions specific to your field, or browse best-selling book lists (heres a great list of business books).Ladders is now on SmartNewsDownload the SmartNews app and add the Ladders channel to read the latest career news and advice wherever you go.To write well, you must also understand the basics of the English language - how sentences are composed, the different parts of speech, subject/verb agreement, tense, and punctuation. Pick up a copy of Stephen Kings On Writing for a fresh take on writing rules.Memorize homophonesTheres no way around it - many rules in the English language require memorization. Among the most frequently committed grammatical errors are misused homophones, which are words that sound the same but have different meanings.Youre/your, there/their/theyre, its/its, and then/than are all commonly confused. An easy tool to help with contractions is to remember that they are derived from two words. Youre is you are theyre is they are and its is it is. Then is used to indicate time, whereas than is used as a comparison.Learn first-person singular pronounsSentences often call for choosing the correct first-person singular pronoun - either I or me. Remember that I is a subject pronoun, whereas me is an object pronoun. A helpful way to determine word choice is to remove any other subjects. For example, consider the sentence My roommate and I/me went to the store. If you think about the sentence as I went to the store or Me went to the store, its more obvious that I is correct.I is the subject of the verb to be.Learn how to use commasAs a very broad rule of thumb, commas are used to indicate pauses in a sentence. They should notlage be used in place of a period. For example, We went to the baseball field, it was fun is incorrect. But We went to the baseball field, and it was fun is correct, as commas can be used to separate two i ndependent clauses when joined by coordinating conjunctions like and, or, or but. Commas are also used to separate three or more phrases in a series, after an introductory clause or phrase, and to set off nonessential clauses or phrases.Beware the dangling modifierA dangling modifier is a word or phrase that doesnt have a clear subject. After reviewing your notes, the conclusion remains elusive contains a dangling modifier. Who is reviewing the notes? The sentence should be rewritten to say, After reviewing your notes, I am unable to come to a conclusion.Stay activeAll sentences are identified as being either active or passive. In an active sentence, the subject perfassons the action. The girl ate the salad is an active sentence. In a passive sentence, the subject of the sentence is also the subject of the action. The salad was eaten by the girl is a passive sentence. Though both are grammatically correct, passive sentence structures often lead to more errors, including dangling modi fiers, misplaced commas, and run-on sentences. Sticking to the active voice will help ensure clarity.Proofread, and read your piece out loudA common cause of poor writing is time, as writers often power through emails and memos, giving a document a cursory glance before sending it to colleagues or clients. Step away from your piece before you submit it, and give it a thorough proofread.Reading your writing in a new form - for example, on paper instead of on a screen in a different font or out loud - can be helpful in finding typos or grammatical errors.Speaking aloud will also help you to catch redundancies - phrases like 3 a.m. in the morning and $2 million dollars are redundant because a.m. indicates morning, and the word dollars is a repetition of the dollar sign. This article originally appeared on Business Insider.

How to Check Emails for Fake Hyperlinks

How to Check Emails for Fake HyperlinksHow to Check Emails for Fake HyperlinksIt is easy to send an emaille with hyperlinks that appear to lead to a trusted site, when in fact they take you to a spam site or trigger a virus download. To safeguard your computer and your identity, it is important to check all suspicious emails for fake hyperlinks. Suppose you get an email from the ASPCA requesting a donation, or perhaps a digital newsletter with links to click for more information. You love animals, and you want to help. What do you do? What about an email with the option to unsubscribe from future mailings? Are these legit? First, remember that reputable organizations will not automatically subscribe you to their newsletters newsletter subscriptions are initiated by you. Therefore, always assume that any and all unsolicited email is spam or fake. This is especially true of nonprofit fundraisers who, for the fruchtwein part, will not send you any unsolicited email. How Hyperlinks Ar e Faked in Emails The email in question might say, Help save animals today ... click here. Or the email might even show a valid-looking URL hyperlink like http//aspca.org. However, where you think youre going is not always where you end up when you click these links. Checking for Fake Hyperlinks in Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express If you use Microsoft Outlook to view your email, it is easy to verify legitimate hyperlinks. In the email Right Click on the link (do NOT left-click as this may open the link)Select View Source If the email was sent in hypertext markup language format, the HTML code will pop up in a new window. If nothing pops up or you do not see the View Source option, the email message is in another format. To check hyperlinks in plain text email messages, follow the instructions below for plain text messages using AOL and other email clients. Be sure to look at each hyperlink by selecting Find Next until there are no more links to review. Checking for Fake Hyperlinks in Plain Text Messages, Using AOL or Other Clients Generally, if an email contains no attachments, it is safe to open as long as you do not click on anything, download images, or reply to it. Open the email, but do not attempt to open the links or cut and paste a link from an email (you might open the link). Highlight the entire email message (do not just highlight the hyperlink)Copy and paste the email into a blank, unsaved Word documentHover over the link, but do NOT click A small pop-up will show you where the hyperlink leads to, not where the text claims it will l ead you. Remember, what you see is not always what you get It is incredibly easy for the novice spammer to fake hyperlinks in emails. Preparing for a job interview

Preparing for a job bewerbungsgesprch Preparing for a job interviewPosted October 16, 2013, by Helen Isbister lenm 123RF Stock Photo When youre out on the interviewing circuit, a crucial thing to remember is that a square peg wont fit into a round hole. A PhD and even a Nobel Prize could be beaten hands-down at a job interview if a less accomplished mortal better suits the job description and company culture. By the time you make it to the hot seat, you have already established via your resume and cover letter that you have the qualifications and experience required to do the job. Now that you are face-to-face with the interviewer, its time to show that you are also the best fit for their company. The goal to show that you have the skills, background and ability to do the job, plus that you will be able to fit with the companys overall ethos and vibe. Find out about the company culture Tailoring your interview so that you hit all the right buttons means understanding the company an d how it operates. Knowing about the companys background and operations, what management is looking for and what the office vibe is like will help you to do well at the interview and give you a good chance of being offered the job. Getting background information may require a little corporate stalking. Like all 21st century stalking, most of it can be done easily on the Internet. Read the company profile, and read what is being said about the company from sources other than the company website for example, do a Google search for media articles. Dont forget to call up contacts who may be able to give you the inside scoop, and check out some of the key company players on LinkedIn. Pull the job advertisement apart with a red pen, circling all the skills, qualities and experience that the job interviewer may want to explore with you. Start making a list of key skills and personal attributes so you dont waste time elaborating on skills they simply dont care about. Stay focused on the jo b description Its unlikely you will find all the answers to get through the interview on Google, so this is the time to do some extra work. If you are going to sell yourself as the right person for the job, youre going to need to know precisely what you want to say. Dont waste words and your time and theirs. Make a list of all the standard interview questions (see our extensive list here). Using the job description from the job ad and any other information about the job that you have gleaned from your research, write answers to match their requirements, using examples from your

4 Things to Do Now to Prepare for Your 2019 Job Search

4 Things to Do Now to Prepare for Your 2019 Job Search4 Things to Do Now to Prepare for Your 2019 Job Search Most people looking for a job put it on hold in December. Thats generally because hiring slows down during the holiday season as people take vacations and lose time to seasonal events, and companies do other year-end activities like budgeting and employee evaluations.December may not be when youll land a lot of interviews for permanent work, but its still a time of opportunity. If you know you will be seeking a job in the new year, you should take the month to get as ready as you can for the new year and the return of normal hiring rhythms.Of course, if youre out of work , you should not put your search on hold for December. Work on all of behauptung things while you keep looking, because a hiring slowdown isnt a hiring stoppage. And if youre employed but ready to move on, these are good ways to get ready. Its not enough to just update your resume. You also nee d to researchwhether resume format for your industry has changed. For example, in journalism, a one-page resume was the standard throughout the 1980s and 1990s. At some point in the 2000s that changed, and multiple pages became not just appropriate, but expected for more senior-level people. In addition to making koranvers you have your resume copyedited and checked for other errors , its important to make sure its current. Talk to hiring managers or other people in your field who have recently gotten hired to find out whats the current norm.Very few people like surprises - at least when it comes to reference requests . Your references may all agree that youre a wonderful person and an excellent worker, but they probably dont want a surprise call asking about you.Let your references know that you plan to start a job search and that youre using them as references. This will have them expecting calls and give them a chance to opt out - maybe they will be traveling out of the count ry, or maybe they dont think they can say anything nice about you.Vacation policies vary by company. Some carry vacationover into the new year, and some pay you for unused time if you decide to leave, while others do neither.December is a popular month to take time off, and in some cases, even companies where unused time does not carry over will allow you to book January vacations using 2018 time. If you have unused days, see if you can use them early in 2019, which can give you time to search for a job and go on interviews.Consider the type of job youll be applying for and examine your skill set . Maybe theres something you know how to do that youre a little rusty at. Take an zugnglich refresher course or do something that lets you show during an interview that you worked on that area. Even just starting the process can make a big difference to prospective employers. While December can be a hectic month, it also tends to be a time when most workers in fields that arent retail-rela ted get time off. Use that time both to prepare for your job search and to recharge your batteries .Do things like setting up email alerts for certain job titles and bookmarking company careers pages you want to track. Make sure you have interview outfits ready to go and that you have nicely printed copies of your resume and references. Theres only so much you can prepare, but doing what you can will make it easier once the job market picks back up in the new year. This article was originally published on The Motley Fool . Risks of Robotic Warfare

Risks of Robotic Warfare Risks of Robotic Warfare Risks of Robotic Warfare Growing military investment in robotic technologyby theU.S. as well as some 40 other nationsindicates that robots are rapidly becoming an important piece of tomorrows military arsenal. The U.S. fields more than 5,300 unmanned aerial vehicles and more than 12,000 ground robots to reduce risk to soldiers, gather intelligence, and strike stealthily at remote enemies.Israel and South Korea use armed robots to patrol their borders. Operators in cubicles in the U.S. routinely fly drone aircraft via remote control, monitoring, and attacking potential targets.U.S. military personnel credit drone attacks with disrupting Al Qaedas leadership along the hard-to-reach Afghanistan-Pakistan border. On the ground, soldiers deploy robots to search dangerous locations and to find and defuse roadside bombs. New models that carry weapons have also already entered service. As automated systems become more capable, some military thin kers envision future conflicts that involve tens of thousands of armed autonomous and remote-controlled robots. Yet using robots also poses worrisome risks.Peter W. Singer, director of the 21st Century Defense Initiative and a senior fellow in foreign policy at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C., studies the ethically disturbing nature of modern warfare. His previous books dealt with military services companies and the use of child soldiers. He wrestled with risks posed by robots in his latest book, Wired for War (Penguin, 2009).A soldier with a packable ground robot designed for reconnaissance, surveillance, and bomb disposal.Robotic warfare is open-source warfare, Singer said. The technology is highly commercialized and affordable. With $1,000, an enemy could build a drone that has roughly the same capabilities of the Raven drones used by our soldiers in Iraq, Singer said. The Raven is a small drone used as a scout by ground troops. During the Israeli invasion of Lebano n in 2006, Hezbollah fighters fielded at least four drones.Singer believes the combination of robotics and terrorism will empower individuals at the expense of states and make it easier to launch terrorist attacks. While researching his book, Singer came upon an Air Force study that found that drones were the optimal platform for deploying weapons of mass destructionand one against which we have no effective defenses.A similar robot checking for explosives in a test vehicle.Unintended Consequences How would America weigh going to war when it can put robots rather than citizens into harms way? Many people I interviewed worried that it was going to make us more cavalier about the use of force, Singer said.Worse, he is concerned that warrather than being seen through the memories, wounds, and losses of those who foughtwill morph into entertainment. Circulating on the Internet are more than 7,000 clips of combat footage, mostly from drones. People e-mail them to one another, or set them to music.Policy makers assume American technology strikes fear in enemy hearts. But overseas, the reverse can be true. Hearing a drone buzzing overhead, a Lebanese news editor told Singer that Americans were cowards because they send out machines to fight us.And drone strikes can be counterproductive. In a May 2009 opinion piece in The New York Times, David Kilcullen (a former adviser to General David Petraeus, and Andrew Exum, an Army officer in Iraq and Afghanistan and now a fellow at the Center for a New American Security) observed that many targets are not positively identified and air strikes not always precise. Thus, some attacks kill more civilians than terrorists. Coverage via the Internet and traditional media brings the horror of civilian deaths home to everyone in the region, radicalizing the population and driving civilians into the arms of local militants. There may be unanticipated psychological costs to U.S. soldiers. Many drone pilots operate out of trailers at a mili tary base in Nevada. They talk about the disconnect of working with virtual partners they may never meet to direct kills against enemy combatants that exist only on their video monitors.Robot-based warfare may change the skills the military seeks in future soldiers. While training an F-15 pilot takes years, drone pilots achieve comparable results in mere months, and they pilot far cheaper aircraft. Indeed, one of the Armys top drone pilots was a 19-year-old high school dropoutbut he was an experienced video gamer.Watch Your BackUp to now, the development of robot-based warfare has been a great asset to the U.S. military. But although the world leader today in military robots, the U.S. cannot rest on its accomplishments. In technology, there is no long-term, first-mover advantage, Singer cautioned. The British and the French invented the tank in World War I, but the Germans learned how to use it right. The profoundest risk is that some enemy force discovers a better way to employ robo t warriors.Adapted from The Drone Warriors by Alan S. Brown, Associate Editor, Mechanical Engineering, January 2010.Up to now, the development of robot-based warfare has been a great asset to the U.S. military. But although the world leader today in military robots, the U.S. cannot rest on its accomplishments.

8 Reasons Why You Didnt Get the Job

8 Reasons Why You Didnt Get the Job 8 Reasons Why You Didnt Get the Job 7 True, there are plenty of reasons completely out of your control that you may not have gotten the gig; perhaps they hired internally, encountered budgeting issues, or simply decided to move in another direction. But more often than most people would like to admit, the problem is more personal. As difficult as it is to face your failings, recognizing them can help you avoid the same rejection in the future. Read on for eight reasons why you may not have gotten a call back. 8 Reasons Why You Didn̢۪t Get the Job You arent qualified for the job. You may have convinced yourself that you were qualified. You may have even been able to convince the hiring manager that you were qualified at first. But somewhere between submitting your resume and sitting down for an interview, the interviewer decided that you could not handle the job- at least not as well as someone else they interviewed. Allowing yourself to recognize that the job wasnt actually a good fit for your skill set will not only help ease the sting of rejection, but it will help you target your search more effectively in the future. You didnt sell yourself in the interview. Maybe you were the best candidate for the job and you knew it! But if you didnt clearly promote your strengths in the interview, theres no way for the interviewer to know what they are. In most cases, you only have a few minutes to impress someone, so theres no time to waste on bad answers or off-topic ramblings. Its important to be prepared with a list of reasons why youre perfect for the job, which you can then work organically into the interview. You oversold yourself. Just as dangerous as underselling yourself is going overboard. While confidence is important, no one wants to work with an egomaniac. A bit of humility goes a long way when describing your assets and professional triumphs. Its all about balance. You didnt seem interested enough. Perhaps you showed up to the interview late, unprepared, or under-dressed. Or maybe you just had a general attitude of boredom, which may or may not have been caused by nervousness. Either way, if you dont show recruiters that youre enthusiastic about the position, youre likely to be beat out by candidates who do. You didnt use your network effectively. Tapping into your network of professional contacts is especially important for freelancers. Knowing someone within the organization, or even a friend of a friend, can often help your chances of getting hired. Dont be ashamed to take advantage of who you know- it just might land you the job. You spoke negatively about your current or past employer. No matter how poorly they may have treated you, it never looks good to insult past or current employers. Take the high road and avoid saying anything negative. Your references werent supportive. Be careful when choosing someone to back you up professionally. Make sure that you trust them completely, because if they decide to focus on your weaknesses rather than your strengths, it could very well cost you the job. You made a post-interview slipup. Maybe you forgot to send a thank-you letter to an old-school CEO, or perhaps you tweeted about how awkward the interview was moments after leaving. Just because the interview is over doesnt mean you can stop your good behavior. Not getting a call back for a second interview does not necessarily mean you have done something incorrectly. However, if you find yourself in a rut of not getting a job or a call back, evaluate the areas where you could have potentially gone wrong and put more attention on those areas as you continue in your job search. Have you ever accidentally ruined your chances during a job interview? Share why you didnt get the job in the comments! What to Say (and What Not To) When a Friend Gets Laid Off

What to Say (and What Not To) When a Friend Gets Laid Off What to Say (and What Not To) When a Friend Gets Laid Off Several years ago at my father’s funeral, people lined up to pay their respects, including Pat, one of the best bosses I’ve ever had. I adored Pat: She was a smart lady, a great mentor, and a real motivator.I’ll never forget all she taught me: “You know what you should do? Take all that great knowledge about marketing and start your own business. It would really show off your smarts and you could even take some of the clients from this place!”As helpful as these types of suggestions may sound (and as great as they might be), your comrade is probably not ready to hear them. In fact, what he or she may be hearing instead is: “Figure out something awesome- and fast,” or “You could have done so much here, but you just didn’t get it done,” or, worse: “I know your puppy just got ran over by a car; why don’t you just go get a new one?”People need time to get used to the concept of moving on. When you’re let go, you suddenly no longer belong, you’re no longer pa rt of a team, and you no longer have a place to go from Monday through Friday. Replacing this comfortable routine with suggestions of the unknown doesn’t really help. At least not yet.2.  Point to Possibilities Outside of OurselvesWalt Disney was actually fired from the Kansas City Star for not being creative enough. Multi-billionaire author J.K. Rowling was let go from her job as a secretary. Oprah Winfrey was pulled off the air, called “unfit for television” by a Baltimore producer. Home Depot came about because its owners were cut from a no-longer-in-existence home improvement chain. Even New York’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg was squeezed out of his job at Citigroup. And the list goes on and on.The point is: Reminding your colleague of people we all respect and admire who triumphed in spite of their dismissals can help him or her focus on possibilities without having to look inward at the current circumstances. It gives a bit of perspective, helping this person to realize th at he or she is not to blame for the layoff- and that this, too, shall pass.3.  Stick Around, But Say NothingNo matter the individual or the circumstances, being let go from a job stings. Feelings and emotions closely align with the well-known five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. In addition, financial worries, societal standings, and self-worth are often negatively impacted.During such times, your co-worker, your friend, or your family member needs you to be there, but he or she doesn’t necessarily need you to say anything. Remember: While the worst thing you can do is disappear from someone’s life and shun him or her (which often does happen), the second worst thing is to say something that creates an even deeper wound. So, stick around, and if you aren’t sure what to say, just say nothing. What this person really needs is to talk it out and for you to listen with both ears. So give him or her a hug, look into his or her eyes, and nod w ith understanding and validation. It’ll do a great deal of good and be more than enough to ease your colleague’s transition.Photo of woman laid off courtesy of Shutterstock.

How to Easily Incorporate Social Media into Your Job Search

How to Easily Incorporate Social Media into Your Job Search How to Easily Incorporate Social Media into Your Job Search You̢۪re probably on social media already, even if you̢۪re just using it for personal interactions. Perhaps Facebookmaybe Instagramcould be Twitter. Whatever you̢۪re already using personally, it̢۪s vital to incorporate social media professionally as well. was recently asked to weigh in on using social media to job search for the article, Social Media Success: A Guide for Job Seekers. We discussed why social media is important for professionals- especially those who are actively job searching, and how you can easily incorporate social media into your job search. Here̢۪s how to easily incorporate social media into your job search: Why is it important for job seekers to utilize social media? When a recruiter searches an applicants name on the Internet to learn more about them, its actually a red flag nowadays if someone isnt found to be active online. LinkedIn is the bare minimum a job seeker should be using to help show employers that theyre technologically savvy and understand the basics of digital communication. Why is it important to make sure all your info is up to date on LinkedIn? If youve applied for a job, hiring managers may look to your LinkedIn profile to learn more about you. If it doesnt match your resume with your most up-to-date jobs, projects, and skills, they may be confused. It also may send the message that youre not taking enough care with your job search or professional image. Additionally, even if youre not actively applying for jobs, hiring managers use LinkedIn to find applicants- sometimes before they even post an available opening. If youre interested in new opportunities, even in the least, keep your LinkedIn profile up to date so youll be findable when a recruiter starts searching. How can you use social media to help you get a job? You don̢۪t need to use all of your social media accounts for job searching. Most people pick one or two for personal use and one or two for professional use. For example, I̢۪m personally active on Facebook, but I use Twitter and LinkedIn exclusively for professional interactions. One more general tip- if a picture is worth a thousand words, then the profile picture you choose for your social media accounts is quite valuable in your job search. Keep that picture updated and professional, and use a similar picture or the same picture across all your social accounts, so you always make a great first impression. Here are some tips for choosing a great LinkedIn profile picture. How should you use Twitter to get ahead in the job search? Here are three quick ideas: Complete your Twitter profile and start following people in your industry- thought leaders, people who work for companies you like, recruiters or career coaches, etc. Tweet and share information about your field or industry to demonstrate your knowledge and expertise areas. Engage in related Twitter chats- theyre usually held by industry organizations or industry experts, and they can introduce you to great information and new people. To find Twitter chats in your field, ask your followers if they know of any good ones. Or use a database like TweetReports, which lists Twitter chats by topic, hashtag, description, and day of the week. Follow your favorite job boards. For example, is very active on Twitter and following us is a great way for people to learn about the latest remote and flexible job listings, companies hiring, and specific job search advice. How should you use Facebook to get ahead in the job search? Its okay to decide youd rather keep at least one social media profile strictly private, and most often people choose Facebook. To make sure it doesnt wind up in front of curious recruiters, set your privacy settings very high and monitor your activity so youre not tagged in photos or posts that arent appropriate. How can you use LinkedIn to get ahead in your job search? LinkedIn is the ultimate social media job search tool. Use it to research your connections with companies you want to work for stay in touch with your network by sending the occasional thoughtful message write industry and field-related blog posts on LinkedIn Publishing and even use their partnership with the online course company LinkedIn Learning to upgrade your skills and knowledge, or to help your job search, like the course, Finding a Remote Job. Heres Every Company Thats Ever Been #1 on Best Places to Work

Here's Every Company That's Ever Been #1 on Best Places to Work Here's Every Company That's Ever Been #1 on Best Places to Work In the ten years that Glassdoor’s Employees’ Choice Awards have been around, just six companies (some with repeated wins) have taken home the honor of being named the #1 Best Place to Work . But while a lot has changed over the past decade - the rise of smartphones, the increasing relevance of social media, the man bun trend - one thing that hasn’t is the fact that these six companies are all great places to work. So if you’re in the market for a job, consider working at one of these proven winners. Details: General Mills was the first company to be crowned the #1 Best Place to Work in the inaugural year of Glassdoor’s Employees’ Choice Awards. While their win was back in 2009, both early and current reviews of General Mills praised the company’s commitment to community, diversity and doing the right thing. On top of that, they offer competitive pay and benefits and an out-of-this-world HQ in Minneapolis featuring a fitness center, salon, coffee shop, deli and more. Details: Since Southwest secured the #1 position in 2010, the company has made Best Places to Work every year after. Reviews indicate this is largely due to the great people and excellent company culture the company has cultivated. “You are treated very well and like family,” says one current Flight Attendant . “The ‘culture’ is amazing, the employees are truly happy.” Another recurring theme was the excellent perks and benefits. Southwest offers “flight benefits, profit sharing and 401k match up to 9.1%,” one Senior FP&A Manager shares . Details: This year’s top Best Place to Work is no stranger to the #1 spot - 2018 marks the hat trick for Facebook. So what keeps employees so enamored with their employer year after year? Working with smart and innovative colleagues, career opportunities, a strong mission and transparent management, to name just a few. Oh, and did we mention the perks ? Get ready for free meals and snacks, onsite health and dental centers, laundry services and four months of paid parental leave. “Ability to drive impact from day one. Incredibly lean teams, great management exposure, people bring their authentic selves,” a current Business Analyst says. “Fantastic wellness benefits, amazing restaurants on campus, great shuttle service throughout the Bay.” Details: Bain & Company is the only other company to have made the #1 spot on Best Places to Work three different times. On top of that, the company has also made the list every single year since the award first started. Employees thrive on the intellectually stimulating work, which is creative and challenging. “We work with change oriented executives to drive transformational change throughout organizations in the toughest areas. We work collaboratively with our clients and enable the organization from top to bottom to own and drive change,” says a current Manager . Employees - or Bainies, as they’re known - also mention the supportive nature of the workplace community. “For me, it’s the people that make Bain such a special place to work. Every day, I come into the office and I learn from people above, below, and at the same level as me,” a third current Manager says. Details: Things have changed a lot at Google over the past decade - their size, their product offerings, their logo… but despite these differences, their company culture is still just as strong as ever. “Working with some very smart, driven and effective colleagues is very engaging,” says a former employee . “The scale of work (big) is very motivating. Most clients or campaigns or businesses partners are the tops in their respective industries. As such you’re more likely than not to work with big budgets, large user figures, and hot technology.” On top of their awesome culture, Google also happens to be one of the highest-paying companies in 2017 - not too shabby! Details: Two words: travel coupons. Employees at Airbnb receive this awesome perk each quarter, which add up to $2,000 per year . But that’s certainly not the only great thing about Airbnb. “The company is generous, mission driven, and works hard to make employees heard,” says a current employee . “Great location, motivated and sincere people. Each time I strike up a conversation with someone new, I feel like I’ve made a friend. I can be my self, quirks and all, and am embraced.” Word on the street is that it’s an especially great place to work around the holiday season. “Holiday shutdown. Everyone gets off from Dec 20th till Jan 1st,” says a current Cloud Engineer .

Why You Need Friends at Work [Infographic] - The Muse

Why You Need Friends at Work [Infographic] - The Muse Why You Need Friends at Work [Infographic] Did you take the job to make friends? No, probably not. That would be quite low on the list of good reasons to accept an offer. But having them sure is a perk, isn’t it? Working with people you like can literally help power you through the day. And in case you think this is an exaggeration and that work pals are just good for grabbing a beer with at the end of a long week, take this statement about the crucial nature of work friends from the infographic below: “Office friendships have a direct link with engagement and productivity.” The infographic is, in fact, full of insightful nuggets, but as someone who values your work friends, you probably won’t be too surprised at the findings. Those seemingly pointless conversations you have with co-workers while waiting for the coffee to finish brewing or on your way to a meeting? They’re not nothing. In fact, the data shows that having friends at the office can actually help your career. A few minutes of non-work related banter can be viewed as a distracting force, or it can be seen as an engagement-enhancing break. So, it’s not just your social life that stands to benefit from these relationships but your professional life, too. Think about it: When you’re in good spirits, you’re likely to find it easier to complete your to-do list- from the tedious, mundane tasks to the ones that require more creative energy. You don’t have to have a best friend- though if you’re lucky enough to have a work BFF, well then, you may be one of the 50% of people who say that it’s resulted in having a strong connection with the company. But just having any friends means you’re likely to be happier at work, and if you’re happy, you’re engaged, and when you’re engaged, you produce better work. You open yourself up to challenges. And maybe you even propose new and exciting ideas to your boss, bolstered by your co-workers’ praise and encouragement. The fact is, the workday can be long and exhausting, so it really helps if you’re surrounded by people who you actually enjoy. What’s more: “The more friendly you are with the people you see every day, the happier you’ll be,” explains Muse writer Kaitlyn Russell. So, the next time you catch yourself not doing your work and instead chatting with a colleague, go ahead and pat yourself on the back for cultivating those work relationships. It means you’re going places.

How to Answer Interview Questions About Organization

How to Answer Interview Questions About Organization How to Answer Interview Questions About Organization Its not surprising that  job interviewers  often toss out a question about your organizational skills. The ability to efficiently allocate time, energy, and resources is critical to nearly every position in any industry. Organization is also a necessary  soft skill  for people who work in fast-paced environments where they are expected to be excellent  multitaskers. Before you sit down for an interview, think through your response to interview questions about organization. How to Talk About Organization There isn’t a single right way to stay organized, and thus there isnt one correct answer to the question.Talk about your own personal methods, what works for you, and why. Demonstrate that youve thought about your organizational methods and challenges, that they are important to you, and that you have a system that works.Describe your specific methods for staying organized in as much detail as you can.Relate an example of ways in which your system benefited you and others.Stress that you can be flexible to accommodate unexpected new problems and tasks.   How to Describe Yourself You may be asked whether you would describe yourself as an organized person. The short answer is yes, but consider expanding your answer with some details that show the rationale underlying your confidence. You might tailor one of these examples to your own experiences and habits: Absolutely. I like to keep a checklist and make sure that each item gets the attention it needs.Yes, sometimes a little too much so. I make sure that everything is neat and in order.I am a very organized and thorough person, which I think contributes to my success.Yes, I use several online and desktop tools to stay organized. On Monday of each week, I review my calendar and highlight the key things I need to accomplish.I like to plan my daily, weekly, and long-term work projects carefully.I make it a point to set up reminders and write  to-do lists. Then I carve out blocks of time to devote to particular tasks, so I have designated steps and the required time allocated to meet those goals. I plan ahead as much as possible, but in reality, things come up at the last minute. Thus, I make sure I can adjust and respond quickly, integrating new priorities into my daily work.I make sure I and my team members know established project deadlines, and then I set benchmarks so that we can track our progress. For most projects, I also set “early deadlines” a day or two ahead of the “final deadline” and do my best to meet that target so that the project is completed ahead of time. Prepare for In-Depth Follow-Up Questions Interviewers often follow up an initial question about organization to test whether youve really thought it through. These examples show how detailed your thinking has to be in preparing for the interview. What steps do you take to organize and plan a project?Your answer should demonstrate how you use organizational skills to prepare for a  project  and then focus on it.How do you accommodate last-minute changes that you have to fit in?Your answer should show that you can amend your plans and integrate new information when necessary. How do you prioritize the tasks within one project?Your response should demonstrate that you know how to plan, analyze various approaches and possibilities, make sound decisions, and succeed with your workload. How do you plan ahead of time for possible deadline changes or unforeseen challenges? Tell us about how you develop back-up plans in case “Plan A” doesn’t work out.How do you handle a situation when your planning was insufficient?Discuss your problem-solving capabilities, your ability to multitask, how you handle competing priorities, and your ability to reorganize as needed. Provide Examples of Your Skills As you answer these follow-up questions, try to provide specific examples of occasions where you have demonstrated your organizational skills in the workplace. This will be particularly effective if you can show how your skills solved a problem or otherwise contributed to your company. Perhaps you were able to eliminate a backlog of paperwork. Maybe you established deadlines and processes for an important project that ensured its successful completion. By describing how your organizational talents have had a positive impact, you’ll be able to impress your interviewers as being someone who could make
