Operators in cubicles in the U.S. routinely fly drone aircraft via remote control, monitoring, and attacking potential targets.U.S. military personnel credit drone attacks with disrupting Al Qaedas leadership along the hard-to-reach Afghanistan-Pakistan border. On the ground, soldiers deploy robots to search dangerous locations and to find and defuse roadside bombs. New models that carry weapons have also already entered service.As automated systems become more capable, some military thin kers envision future conflicts that involve tens of thousands of armed autonomous and remote-controlled robots. Yet using robots also poses worrisome risks.Peter W. Singer, director of the 21st Century Defense Initiative and a senior fellow in foreign policy at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C., studies the ethically disturbing nature of modern warfare. His previous books dealt with military services companies and the use of child soldiers. He wrestled with risks posed by robots in his latest book, Wired for War (Penguin, 2009).A soldier with a packable ground robot designed for reconnaissance, surveillance, and bomb disposal.Robotic warfare is open-source warfare, Singer said. The technology is highly commercialized and affordable. With $1,000, an enemy could build a drone that has roughly the same capabilities of the Raven drones used by our soldiers in Iraq, Singer said. The Raven is a small drone used as a scout by ground troops. During the Israeli invasion of Lebano n in 2006, Hezbollah fighters fielded at least four drones.Singer believes the combination of robotics and terrorism will empower individuals at the expense of states and make it easier to launch terrorist attacks. While researching his book, Singer came upon an Air Force study that found that drones were the optimal platform for deploying weapons of mass destructionand one against which we have no effective defenses.A similar robot checking for explosives in a test vehicle.Unintended Consequences How would America weigh going to war when it can put robots rather than citizens into harms way? Many people I interviewed worried that it was going to make us more cavalier about the use of force, Singer said.Worse, he is concerned that warrather than being seen through the memories, wounds, and losses of those who foughtwill morph into entertainment. Circulating on the Internet are more than 7,000 clips of combat footage, mostly from drones. People e-mail them to one another, or set them to music.Policy makers assume American technology strikes fear in enemy hearts. But overseas, the reverse can be true. Hearing a drone buzzing overhead, a Lebanese news editor told Singer that Americans were cowards because they send out machines to fight us.And drone strikes can be counterproductive. In a May 2009 opinion piece in The New York Times, David Kilcullen (a former adviser to General David Petraeus, and Andrew Exum, an Army officer in Iraq and Afghanistan and now a fellow at the Center for a New American Security) observed that many targets are not positively identified and air strikes not always precise.Thus, some attacks kill more civilians than terrorists. Coverage via the Internet and traditional media brings the horror of civilian deaths home to everyone in the region, radicalizing the population and driving civilians into the arms of local militants.There may be unanticipated psychological costs to U.S. soldiers. Many drone pilots operate out of trailers at a mili tary base in Nevada. They talk about the disconnect of working with virtual partners they may never meet to direct kills against enemy combatants that exist only on their video monitors.Robot-based warfare may change the skills the military seeks in future soldiers. While training an F-15 pilot takes years, drone pilots achieve comparable results in mere months, and they pilot far cheaper aircraft. You spoke negatively about your current or past employer. No matter how poorly they may have treated you, it never looks good to insult past or current employers. Take the high road and avoid saying anything negative. Your references werent supportive. Be careful when choosing someone to back you up professionally. I adored Pat: She was a smart lady, a great mentor, and a real motivator.I’ll never forget all she taught me: “You know what you should do? Take all that great knowledge about marketing and start your own business. It would really show off your smarts and you could even take some of the clients from this place!”As helpful as these types of suggestions may sound (and as great as they might be), your comrade is probably not ready to hear them. In fact, what he or she may be hearing instead is: “Figure out something awesome- and fast,” or “You could have done so much here, but you just didn’t get it done,” or, worse: “I know your puppy just got ran over by a car; why don’t you just go get a new one?”People need time to get used to the concept of moving on. When you’re let go, you suddenly no longer belong, you’re no longer pa rt of a team, and you no longer have a place to go from Monday through Friday. Replacing this comfortable routine with suggestions of the unknown doesn’t really help. At least not yet.2.  Point to Possibilities Outside of OurselvesWalt Disney was actually fired from the Kansas City Star for not being creative enough. Multi-billionaire author J.K. Rowling was let go from her job as a secretary. Oprah Winfrey was pulled off the air, called “unfit for television” by a Baltimore producer. Home Depot came about because its owners were cut from a no-longer-in-existence home improvement chain. Even New York’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg was squeezed out of his job at Citigroup. And the list goes on and on.The point is: Reminding your colleague of people we all respect and admire who triumphed in spite of their dismissals can help him or her focus on possibilities without having to look inward at the current circumstances. It gives a bit of perspective, helping this person to realize th at he or she is not to blame for the layoff- and that this, too, shall pass.3.  Stick Around, But Say NothingNo matter the individual or the circumstances, being let go from a job stings. Feelings and emotions closely align with the well-known five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. In addition, financial worries, societal standings, and self-worth are often negatively impacted.During such times, your co-worker, your friend, or your family member needs you to be there, but he or she doesn’t necessarily need you to say anything. Remember: While the worst thing you can do is disappear from someone’s life and shun him or her (which often does happen), the second worst thing is to say something that creates an even deeper wound.So, stick around, and if you aren’t sure what to say, just say nothing. What this person really needs is to talk it out and for you to listen with both ears. So give him or her a hug, look into his or her eyes, and nod w ith understanding and validation. The giant firm with offices all over the world is getting biggerIm talking 4,000 lawyers big. Good luck finding your friends at that company picnic.The firm, which grabbed the number two spot on The National Law Journals 250 largest law firms ranking in 2010, announced a merger with its partner in Australia: DLA Phillips Fox (their partnership dates back to 2006). The merger is slotted for May 1st. This move will add another 600 attorneys to the firms roster, which will make it the biggest law firm in all of the land (Baker McKenzie will be handing over its crown as the number one largest firm unless it finds itself several hundred more lawyers).So whats all the fuss over Australia aside from its fantastic beaches, amazing BBQs and sleep-stealing tennis tournament (for all of you east-coasters dedicated enough to stay up for the 3:30am Federer-Djokovic match last night) ?
